Beta Test

Welcome to my litte Beta! If you see any bugs (especially in the Developer Console), please send them to me. If we are friends, contact me privately. If not, comment on this YouTube video.

I am NOT a graphic designer, so I especially appreciate any feedback for how to make the game look better and feel more intuitive.

If something breaks, you may need to close the page and open it again to keep playing (especially if I have an infinite loop in my Javascript).

Game Settings

When you click "Play" you can set the game options of just click "Start Game" to continue with defaults

Pick how many rounds to play, filter out kid movies, or limit the movies by decade.

Note: Since I have a limited selection of movies, it may limit the number of rounds you can play (e.g. There aren't 100 Kids Movies from the 2010s).

User Preferences

The gear in the top right can be clicked at any point to set your user preferences. While it will alter the display, it won't abandon an in-progress game.

After clicking the gear, it will turn into a "Back Arrow" which can be clicked to return to where you were in the application.

In the user preference section, you can mute sound effects or change how you want movie titles to be displayed ("The" at the front or back).

Gameplay

Guess the movie by its screenshot, but it's hidden behind a black box with holes in it.

Each round has up to 5 phases. Clicking "Show More" will move you to the next phase.

Each phase reveals more of the image, but is worth fewer points. The list of movies to pick from also shrinks each phase, making it easier to guess. After all 7 holes have been punched through the black box and there are still 2 points up for grabs, you can still click "Show More" 1 last time. This will reduce the possible points to 1, will shrink the list to guess from down to 4 options, and instead of adding more holes will make the entire black box slightly transparent.

Medium Difficulty Doubles all points, shrinks the Guess List Size more slowly, & has smaller holes.

Hard Difficulty TRIPLES all points, makes the Guess List always have 25 movies, & has tiny holes.

Incorrect guesses lose you 1 point each.

Still can't figure it out? That's fine, just click "Give Up." You won't lose any points, will be told the answer, & shown the unobstructed screenshot.

Click "Next Round" to continue the game.

At the end of the game, you will be shown your final score and a summary of your game.

Year Bonuses

The year field is completely optional. There is no penalty for leaving it blank or guessing wrong.

If you think you know when a movie came out, type the answer into the year field and you may get a bonus point.

You can only get a "Bonus Point" if you've guessed the movie correctly, though.

If you guess the exact year, you get a +1 bonus point that will be added to your score at the end of the game.

You can get +0.5 if you are 1 year off, and +0.1 if you are 2 years off.
